Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace arrived in May 1999 as the first new Star Wars film in sixteen years, and everything about it was oversized: a $924 million gross, 1,950 effects shots, a trailer that people paid full admission to watch, and a Gungan who became the most argued-about character in the saga.
