98 free Pokemon Go trivia questions with answers — entertainment quiz, new questions added Oct 2026.
50 free Pokemon Go trivia questions with answers. Pokémon Go turned the world into a Pokédex in the summer of 2016 and never really went away. This quiz sticks strictly to the mobile game: how a Google Maps April Fools' joke and John Hanke's Ingress grew into Niantic's phenomenon, the launch-week server meltdowns and Guinness records, Team Mystic, Valor and Instinct and their leaders, Professor Willow, Gyms and raids, Buddy Pokémon, Community Day, the Go Fest 2017 disaster in Chicago, Team GO Rocket and Shadow Pokémon, the Go Battle League, the Go Plus gadgets, the strange real-world incidents and bans, and the 2025 sale to Scopely. Easy questions cover which bird stands for Team Mystic and who starred in the first Community Day; the hard ones want the hacking group behind the July 2016 outage, the Korean glitch city and the fan-voted 2026 Community Day Pokémon. Made for players who still remember the three-step glitch. Looking for the anime and main games instead? See our general Pokémon quiz. Every answer was checked against Wikipedia's articles on the game, Niantic and its events, plus the Bulbapedia encyclopaedia for in-game mechanics, and each question carries the sentence that backs it up.

Q 01What real-world technology does Pokémon Go use to place wild Pokémon around the player?
GPS
GPS pins your avatar to your real position, so wild Pokémon turn up as you walk around, and an optional AR mode uses the phone's camera to show them in the scene in front of you.
Q 02The Google Maps Pokémon Challenge that inspired Pokémon Go marked which day in 2014?
April Fools' Day
April Fools' Day 2014: Google Maps hid Pokémon across its world map and dangled a fake job as the company's Pokémon Master. The prank caught the eye of Niantic's John Hanke, and two years later it was a real game.
Q 03What forced Niantic to pause Pokémon Go's international rollout days after its July 2016 launch?
Overloaded servers
Overloaded servers: traffic passed Niantic's forecast within 15 minutes of the first launches in Australia and New Zealand and peaked at 50 times the plan, so other countries had to wait.
Q 04Which coffee chain partnered with Pokémon Go in December 2016, turning its US stores into PokéStops and Gyms?
Starbucks
Starbucks marked the deal with a Pokémon GO Frappuccino, a vanilla bean drink blended with raspberry syrup and blackberries, sold as thousands of its US stores went live as PokéStops and Gyms.
Q 05At what trainer level do players first choose between Team Mystic, Valor and Instinct?
5
5 is the level that opens Gyms, and tapping your first one makes you pick a side, because Valor, Mystic and Instinct exist to fight each other for control of those Gyms.
Q 06Which Legendary bird represents the blue Team Mystic?
Articuno
Articuno is Mystic's mascot, with Zapdos for yellow Instinct and Moltres for red Valor. When Mystic's players out-caught the other teams at the first Go Fest in 2017, their bird reached raids first.
Q 07Who leads Team Valor?
Candela
Candela leads red Team Valor, which prizes strength in battle. She and the other two leaders got names and faces only weeks after launch, and later took on the job of appraising your Pokémon.
Q 08Which Pokémon, added in November 2016, hides as another species until you catch it?
Ditto
Ditto never shows on the map: it poses as an ordinary wild Pokémon and only drops the act once caught, so hunting one means catching its known disguises over and over.
Q 09Which region's Pokémon were added in the February 2017 update that expanded the original 151?
Johto
Johto is the setting of Gold and Silver, and more than 80 of its species arrived at once. New evolution items from PokéStops also let some of the original 151 evolve into Johto species.
Q 10The Buddy Pokémon feature, added in September 2016, rewards you with what for walking a set distance?
Candy
Candy of your buddy's own species is the reward, which made walking the way to evolve or power up a Pokémon you almost never meet in the wild.
Q 11Which Pokémon starred in Pokémon Go's very first Community Day, in January 2018?
Pikachu
Pikachu caught during the three-hour event knew the exclusive move Surf, a nod to the fan-favorite surfing Pikachu that rides the waves in Pokémon Yellow's Pikachu's Beach minigame.
Q 12Trading arrived in Pokémon Go in June 2018 and costs both players which resource?
Stardust
Stardust is paid by both players on every trade. Niantic set the price of a Legendary or shiny swap between brand-new friends prohibitively high to head off a black market, and it falls as the friendship grows.
Q 13Which holiday gave Pokémon Go its first in-game event?
Halloween
Halloween 2016 was the game's first event of any kind: a week of extra Gastly, Haunter, Gengar and other spooky species, staged to win back the millions who had drifted away since the summer.
Q 21Since 2020, Pokémon Go players can send Pokémon one-way into which cloud storage service?
Pokémon Home
Pokémon Home takes transfers one way only: nothing sent there can come back to Pokémon Go. A first transfer also unlocks the Mystery Box, an item that draws out a Mythical Pokémon for a short while.
Q 22Weeks after Pokémon Go's July 2016 launch, where did John Hanke first unveil its three team leaders?
San Diego Comic-Con
San Diego Comic-Con gave the game a panel within three weeks of launch. Hanke put faces to the three team leaders, confirmed the Eevee naming trick and said only a tenth of Niantic's ideas were in the game so far.
Q 23Before leading Pokémon Go's research, Professor Willow was once the assistant of which Pokémon Professor?
Q 14Which mobile publisher bought Niantic's games division, including Pokémon Go, for $3.5 billion in 2025?
Scopely
Scopely took the games while founder John Hanke kept Niantic's mapping technology in a spin-off called Niantic Spatial, so Pokémon Go parted company with the man who launched it.
Q 15Which franchise did Niantic license for its 2019 follow-up to Pokémon Go, shut down in January 2022?
Harry Potter
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite launched in June 2019 as a game Niantic hoped would run for decades. It never drew Pokémon Go's crowds and closed on 31 January 2022.
Q 16Junichi Masuda scored Pokémon Go and also helped design which part of it?
Catching
Catching is where Masuda, who wrote the music of Red and Blue and later directed the series, lent a hand: he kept it as simple as throwing a ball straight at a visible target.
Q 17Pokémon Go's Japanese launch was delayed after a leak about a sponsorship deal with which fast-food chain?
McDonald's
McDonald's was the game's first paying sponsor, turning its roughly 3,000 Japanese restaurants into Gyms. When an internal email about the deal leaked onto Japanese forums, the launch was pushed back.
Q 18What nickname did players give the mid-2016 Pokémon Go bug that stuck every nearby Pokémon at maximum footprints?
Three-step glitch
Three-step glitch: every nearby Pokémon showed the full three footprints, so tracking one became guesswork. Niantic's cure on 30 July 2016 was to delete the footprints altogether.
Q 19Which wearable received an official Pokémon Go companion app in December 2016?
Apple Watch
Apple Watch owners could log a session as a workout, count steps toward hatching Eggs and collect items from PokéStops on the wrist. Catching anything still meant pulling out the phone.
Q 20Pokémon Sleep, the app that shares the Pokémon Go Plus + accessory, gives new players which drowsy Pokémon to raise?
Snorlax
Snorlax grows as you feed it by day, and each morning your night is graded Dozing, Snoozing or Slumbering. The better you slept, the more sleeping Pokémon gather around it to be studied.
Oak
Oak once had Willow as his assistant, the game's makers revealed in 2018. Unlike his old boss, Willow hands new Trainers Poké Balls, not a Pokémon: they have to catch their first one themselves.
Q 24Which Mythical Pokémon made its surprise debut in Pokémon Go in 2018, not in a main-series game?
Meltan
Meltan turned up unannounced after a Community Day in September 2018, nameless and impossible to keep. Players argued over whether the hex-nut-headed creature was a glitch until its official reveal three days later.
Q 25In Pokémon Go, 7 km Eggs come from which source rather than from PokéStops?
Opening Gifts
Opening Gifts is the one way to get 7 km Eggs. Gifts are picked up at PokéStops, but players can't open their own, so the Egg goes to whichever friend they send it to.
Q 26Which Pokémon Go feature, launched in late 2018, logs your distance even while the app is closed?
Adventure Sync
Adventure Sync reads your movement from Apple Health or Google Fit, so distance counts toward hatching Eggs with the game shut. Until then, a phone on its own had to stay awake with the app open for a walk to count.
Q 27Pokémon Go's maker Niantic built its 2023 game Monster Hunter Now with which Japanese publisher?
Capcom
Capcom's Monster Hunter fights were squeezed to a maximum of 75 seconds to suit play on the street. A paintball lets you tag a monster you walk past and fight it later at home.
Q 28Pokémon Go's October 2025 overhaul added trainer levels 71 to 80, which demand XP plus what else?
Set research tasks
Set research tasks, called Level-Up Research, gate every level from 71 to 80 on top of XP. The same update lifted the cap from 50, scrapped the old task gates on levels 41 to 50 and dropped nobody's level.
Q 29Which Google engineer created the Maps Pokémon stunt and went on to direct Pokémon Go at Niantic?
Tatsuo Nomura

Q 30Niantic, Pokémon Go's developer, took its name from what?
A 19th-century whaling ship
A 19th-century whaling ship named Niantic ran aground in Gold Rush San Francisco, became a hotel and was buried as the city grew over it. Founder John Hanke liked the idea of hidden history lying unseen under your feet.
