The brand grew out of the Nakajima Aircraft Company, sold its first American cars as 'Cheap and Ugly,' put a boxer engine in the 1000 in 1965 and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive in the Leone in 1972, and then spent the 1990s winning World Rally Championships in blue and gold.
